Hoarding Help

Hoarding Help and advice

DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU ARE ALONE.

In the U.S.A. it is estimated that there are well over 3 million hoarders and the numbers are growing. It’s also very common in Australia, where there is well over 400,000 hoarders.

Hoarding is common place so there’s no need for anyone involved to feel embarrassed, ashamed or guilty! Hoarding is a condition that can be treated.

There are many reasons why hoarding starts some psychologically initiated and some simply because it is just too hard to get rid of rubbish. Sometimes it is the elderly who are holding onto their memories, or its people that lack the physical ability to remove items from their property. The accessibility of the property can be a factor too – very long steep driveway, too many stairs, rural location.

Understand that your loved one, most likely, knows it is wrong, wants to stop, but are unable to control it. When you confront them, they may become defensive, and deny they have a problem.

This is just human nature. When we are confronted with something that we already feel guilty about, the easiest way out of it, is to defend yourself, or avoid talking about it altogether. You should realize that there is sometimes an underlying psychological disorder that accompany hoarding. For example, a tragedy or lifetime event can often be a catalyst.

The 5 Stages Of Hoarding

hoarding help levels of hoarding

What Causes Hoarding

  • Depression
  • Trauma (death, divorce, abuse, loss of some kind)
  • OCD
  • Grew up in a hoarding home
  • Fear of becoming poor (Common in those that grew up in the depression era)
  • Items hold memories
  • Items are still useful to someone
  • Plus many more reasons we hear often.

It’s very difficult to force someone to clean their home, unless they face eviction, or are given an order by their local council to clean it up. Cleanups work best when the person agrees that the situation has to change. To truly stop someone from hoarding is a long process. Counselling, a clean up of their home, and good follow up care are great ideas. Just remember not to judge but to be open minded about things.

 How we can Help

When the time is right to make a start we are here to help. Making a start is the important first step.

We then make a plan with the customer on how we are going to go about decluttering. Area by area we sort everything into obvious disposable items, recyclable items and retrieved items – items of personal or asset value hidden amongst the clutter. From there we will dispose of what is agreed. It is of utmost importance that the customer makes the decision.

We have over 18 years experience in decluttering properties and have a successful record. Every job is different and requires its own level of attention, calmness and respect. We pride ourselves on making the customer feel they are making the right decisions.

We Love Happy Customers.

Thank you for the job you did cleaning out Mum’s house. You and the boys were extremely professional and proficient. You understood our needs and really listened to us, as well as being extremely flexible fitting in with our time requirements.

From the first time we met you when you came out to quote we knew you were the team we could count on to clean-up Mum’s place with and leave her with the dignity she and her belongings deserved. Not once did you probe and ask “silly” questions about either Mum’s hoarding or dementia – unfortunately others who we requested quotes from did!

I don’t think my words will ever express the gratitude I have for you your team. What you did in a week, would have literally taken me months, if I could have gotten through it at all.

I am slowly going through all the photos that you uncovered and know that when I sort and label them they will definitely bring Mum both comfort and memories of a better happier time. Again thank you for the amazing job.

Kind regards,

Naomi
